When a publicist opens a bar you can expect a bit of hype. They've dingied up the entrance of the old Sly to give it a speakeasy feel and set the word out that celebrities frequent the place and yet there's no doorman. The result is expected, people packed in like sardines each wondering why they're here.

GoldBar does oppulence rather well. Gold ceilings, gold chandeliers, gold tables, gold curtains, gold walls covered in tiny gold skulls all add up to a significant wow factor. This bi-level gay bar is a slightly more low key option than Vlada Lounge. It's equally easy to have a conversation with friends or make new ones depending on your fancy. And if you feel like doing both your friends can take over one of the couches lining the wall near the bar and lure in passing hotties.

In the ongoing culture wars of the East Village bar scene, Royale is a huge strike for UESification. Between the plasma TVs, baseball caps, rounds of shots and the girls whose most comfortable mode of communication is via a series of high pitched squeels you can easily forget that not too long ago this used to be one of the best Jazz bars in New York.

-
1576 3rd. Ave. · Upper East Side
A different business is licensed at this address: Yumei Sushi
Attempting to be simultaneously a sports bar and lounge space is naturally going to involve some compromises. The TVs and noise level distract from conversation, the 30 bottle wine list and potted plants make for an odd place to catch the game. However, the extremely small segment of the population that loves a good wine with the Laker's game this place is your best bet in New York.
-
64 3rd Ave. · NoHo
Closed
The giant Times Square style ticker outside insures that everyone who passes through knows what to expect. -
885 4th Ave. · Sunset Park
A different business is licensed at this address: Minnie's
A uniquely Sunset Park kind of place. The place is big but the rooms are tight. The door policy on weekends is simultaneously too restrictive and not restrictive enough. And the theme is too tiki to be cool, but not tiki enough to be hip.
-
179 Smith St. · Boerum Hill
Closed; now Smith Deli and Grill Juice Bar
The theme is summer camp, which granted is more than a little camp itself. The bar's popularity rests in the fact that rather than attempting to capture camp kitsch, they've instead pretty successfully captured the feeling of warmth and camaraderie topped off with some smores for dessert.

Huckleberry BarPick
588 Grand St. · East Williamsburg
Closed; now The Last Call
Williamsburg is on its way to becoming the SoHo just east of the river. So a top-shelf cocktail and tapas bar like this is presumably quite safe from firebombing. However, the question still remains if the armies of gentrification have marched in enough numbers to keep them kitted out with home-made grenadine and goat cheese.

Within the gated community of Breezy Point there's little to no public parking and no public transportation, so getting to this beach bar can be more than tricky. However, if you're black, hispanic, Italian or jewish it might just be worthwhile to have a friend drop you off. The residents of this 98% white (by the latest census) neighborhood don't often get a chance to experience the wonderful blending and mingling of cultures that so many other New Yorker's take for granted and they would surely appreciate the chance.
