By June 2013 Improv Everywhere had turned Black Rabbit into an 1860s bar for a time-travel prank, around the time its black facade was repainted what Greenpointers called "a muddy maroon" to comply with the city's Landmarks Commission1. The prank didn't have far to travel. The bar opened in 2007, all dark wood, candles and lamps, and that November, as it made Time Out New York's Cozy Party Bars, a write-up placed this "brand-new old-world bar" between "Polish discotheques and Spartan tenements"2, 3.
The same write-up called it "nirvana for the brainiacs," and in 2008 the brainiacs got a trivia night that the Village Voice rated the city's best2, 3. In 2014 Greenpointers called it "easily one of the most visually appealing bars in all of Brooklyn," and the press quoted on its own site praises the wooden snugs, garden and working fireplace2, 4. The Infatuation put it more modestly in 2017: "a straightforward pub, but it isn't tacky or smelly"5.
It's still at 91 Greenpoint Avenue with its garden out back, and the trivia, Nerd Alert!, still runs Tuesdays2, 6.
Researched October 2026.
