Overview

Within the gated community of Breezy Point there's little to no public parking and no public transportation, so getting to this beach bar can be more than tricky. However, if you're black, hispanic, Italian or jewish it might just be worthwhile to have a friend drop you off. The residents of this 98% white (by the latest census) neighborhood don't often get a chance to experience the wonderful blending and mingling of cultures that so many other New Yorker's take for granted and they would surely appreciate the chance.

History

Sandy took the building, not the bar

Superstorm Sandy destroyed the Sugar Bowl in 20121. For the three summers that followed, the bar operated out of a temporary structure2, and in 2016 it reopened in Breezy Point in a new, resilient building2.

By 2023 the GrassLighters were back at the Sugar Bowl, rocking their blend of rock, folk, bluegrass and R&B, and the kitchen was open3. Winter is another story: in January 2026 it held last call until March4.

A current listing still puts it at Bedford Avenue and Oceanside, the same corner we listed in 20095.
