Overview

There are few pleasures as singular as a crisp cold Czech lager and a kielbasa hot off the grill, enjoyed in this sun filled beer garden.

At nearly one hundred years old this beer hall and enormous outdoor garden is the spiritual home of New York's Czech and Slovak community. On any given summer weekend dozens of picnic tables fill to capacity thanks to the timeless lure of crisp cold Czech lager, giant kolbasa, and the summer sun.

Why you should go

  • Czech lager is world reknowned and the BBHG has the best selection on tap in New York City.
  • It's like a backyard BBQ 7 days a week
  • Sharing picnic tables over beers can be a great way to make new friends or at least friends for the day.

What you should know

  • Queue up early for food. The line can suddenly go from a few minutes wait to hours between 6-7pm.
  • Outside you can get cheap and decent kilbosa and hamburgers, but inside the tradition Czech dishes are outstanding.

History

Day drinking since 1910

A group of Bohemians, from a region that now lies in the Czech Republic, created this beer garden deep in Astoria in 1910, and it calls itself New York City's oldest1, 2.

We came for a crisp Czech lager and a kielbasa off the grill, in the sun. The garden now has more than 100 picnic tables outside, plus a bar and a sit-down restaurant indoors, and in 2025 a review crowned it the day-drinking capital of Astoria3.

It's still at 29-19 24th Avenue, open for drinks, casual dining and parties2.
