In our day we billed Hook & Ladder as owned and operated by New York's bravest, with free drinks for women on Saturday nights. Its paper trail is thin: a 2004 address list puts the Elbow Benders, a name that needs no explanation in a bar, at Hook & Ladder Pub, 611 Second Avenue¹.
