Before it was a wine bar, the space had been a pharmacy, then a bakery, then briefly an art gallery, and none of those seemed to stick1. Then Jim Mamary opened Black Mountain Wine House, and this one did1.
When we listed it, we called it a rustic wine bar with an emphasis on craft and organic wines from smaller vineyards. In 2010 people sank into Adirondack chairs on the rustic front deck on sunny days, and on chilly nights they settled by the fireplace in the white, farmhouse-chic main room2.
In its eighteenth year, a local newsletter wrote that the wine list was good but not the point: the place had never once tried to modernize itself into something else1. It's still at 415 Union Street, open daily from 6pm to 1am, walk-ins only1, 3.
Researched October 2026.
