History

Perpetually misnamed, now a few doors down

On March 12, 2006, a bartender snacking on McClure's pickles made a discovery, and the next day he reported it to John Roberts, the owner of Bushwick Country Club1. The bar has since made the shot famous, as the first in New York to sell it1. You've probably had one.

The perpetually misnamed dive bar, as one neighborhood paper called it2, ran for 17 years before it shuttered unexpectedly in March 20222.

It didn't stay shut. That August it reopened a few doors down from its original location2, at 608 Grand Street, where a listing updated in September 2026 still has it3. The 2009 address, 618 Grand Street, is now Medusa, a bar for specialty cocktails, weekly food pop-ups, music and events4.
