The main floor of the former China Club gets a sparkly update to better woo the convention set. Crest has every bit of the charm and sophistication of a your average Midwestern hotel lobby, which is to say it's a damn site snazzier than most Midtown event spaces.

-
210 W. 55th St.

Tiny, ground floor hotel lounge feels bigger with the judicious use of mirrors. And with clientele as attractive as this being in close quarters doesn't seem like such a bad thing. Note: Head left at the aquarium.
-
268 W. 47th St.
Closed; now Magic Mike Live
The ancient China Club space has received a much needed update. The roof deck formerly known as the Jade Terrace has been rechristened as Eden. The new aesthetic is a duller more professional version of the old, as is the new crowd.
-

With a location like this a bar/restaurant such as Jack's can aspire to serving quality food and keeping the prices down, and that's about it. Jack does a fine job on both accounts. If you're in a hotel in Times Square and feel like nipping out for a quick low key pint and a spot of grub Jack's is a solid choice.

A genuine taste of the suburban Southwest. The food here is easily on par with TGI Friday's and the cocktails would give anything at Hooters a run for its money. Best yet they've got the city's first mechanical bull, the perfect after dinner stomach mixer.

Like Madame X this Indian themed lounge manages to walk the narrow line between cheesy and sexy, and somehow manages to be both at the same time. Burning incence, red on red décor, pillows everywhere, waitresses in slinky silk sarongs, and Bollywood flicks on the TV all contribute to a laughably tacky, but actually quite sultry environ.

-
Paramount Bar (Paramount Hotel)
235 W. 46th St.

This hotel bar and lounge isn't a bad option if you're in the area. The lounge isn't a scene, and the ambience crystal chandeliers, chalkboard walls, and couches with throws and pillows is comfortable enough if a bit of a style misfire.
-

If ever (god forbid) a series of circumstances conspire so that you find yourself in Times Square and also really quite totally stoned, than this dingey basement piano bar is so bad it just might be a really good time. Order a Coke and zone out as you watch the drunken businessmen sing along to Frank Sinatra. Otherwise under pretty much all other circumstances it's best avoided.

The View Lounge (Marriott Marquis)
1535 Broadway

Remarkable for one reason and one reason only, but man is it a doozy. This bar is on the 48th floor of the Marriott Marquis and it's smack dab in the middle of Times Square, and oh yeah, it rotates .
-
1567 Broadway

Depending on which definition of cool you subscribe too, the Whiskey either approaches the pinacle or falls far short. The design team was top notch - everything shimmers or shines or glows. The crowd looks great. The dress code is strictly enforced. Hair wax is mandatory for men, women must either support their bosoms in a water bra or wear no bra at all. However, the fault line appears when you realize that the bar and its patrons are all trying very, very hard. And isn't that by definition the antithesis of cool?
