Rosebud, on the rocks
Randolph's is named for William Randolph Hearst, and its rosebud motif refers to his purported nickname for the actress Marion Davies1, 2, 3. Hearst built the Warwick New York in 1926 for $5 million, and he commissioned it for Davies, his partner and muse1, 2.
The hotel kept good company. The Beatles stayed there on their 1965 and 1966 US tours, and Cary Grant lived there for 12 years2. Its restaurant, Murals on 54, has 1937 murals by the American illustrator Dean Cornwell, fully restored after a 2004 renovation2, 4.
We once found Randolph's an upscale hotel bar with an unmistakably Midwestern feel and little to draw anyone who wasn't a guest. By 2014 it was being billed as a neighborhood hotspot4. It's still inside the Warwick at 65 West 54th Street, and open daily5.
