History

No substitute for authenticity, or an audience

When we listed it, the Oak Room drew a moneyed, older crowd to watch cabaret by candlelight, and the cover could run upwards of fifty dollars. The room got its first cabaret star in November 19391. In February 2012 Playbill reported the closing of the legendary room, and said declining audiences were responsible for the decision1. The Algonquin, at 59 West 44th Street, now names the Blue Bar Restaurant and Lounge on its dining page2.
