History
Spared the way of the peep show
In 2009, as Time Out put it, this rakish, 1970s-vintage piano bar in the Edison Hotel looked destined to go the way of the 99¢ peep show1. In 2010 came word that it would close at the end of the year after losing its lease2.
In January 2011 the owners of the TriBeCa bar Ward III were reported to be taking over the lease3. The name would stay, along with the general layout, the woodwork and the saloon's reputation as a piano bar3.
It's still at 228 West 47th Street in the Hotel Edison, with red banquettes, lots of wood and mirrors, and live jazz every night1, 4, 5. Time Out now calls it more or less what you'd expect from a cocktail bar in midtown, which, for a bar that lost its lease in 2010, counts as a rescue1, 2.
