All the right ingredients for a good Columbia student hangout: cheap drinks, booth seating, pool and darts.
-
322 2nd ave · Grammercy
No license found in 2026
A simple and straight forward bar. What it's missing in personality and warmth it makes up for with a rare combination of cleanliness and cheap drinks. Look for the small brass plaque and head downstairs to the basement.
-
7BPick
108 Ave. B · East Village
Still pouring
Horseshoe shaped bar where the beer is cheap and the rock is loud and hard.
-
9 Great Jones St. · NoHo
A different business is licensed at this address: Acme Bar & Grill & The Nines
-
85 Ave. A · East Village
Closed; now Drom
The Rook has a new name, but little else has changed. The beer selection is still great, and you're pretty much guaranteed to have the place to yourself most any night of the week.
-
1768 2nd Ave. · Upper East Side
Closed
Successfully replicates the frat party feel of Mardi Gras without all of that distracting cajun culture. The magic recipe: $1 well drinks for girls on Thursday nights.
-
218 E. 53rd St. · Midtown East
Closed; now Hudson Malone
A bi-level sports, beer, and miserbale DJ bar. A decent place to watch the game - drinks are reasonably priced and booths have personal flat screens. On weekend nights the scene is ugly. We're talking clasic Bon Jovi and Apple Pucker shots ugly.
-
233 E. 14th St. · East Village
Closed; now Coyote Ugly
There was a time not too long ago when bars like this confined themselves to the Upper East Side. This sharp counterpoint to Beauty Bar next door features giant plasma TVs, wings and burgers, and standing room only crowds.

Basement bar with cheap food and even cheaper beer. The name says it all.

-
1589 1st Ave. · Upper East Side
A different business is licensed at this address: Horn's Hook Tavern
The former Snapper Creek is now East End Tavern. There's no shortage of Plasma TVs, and the food's pretty reasonable.
-
11 E. 36th St. · Murray Hill

It's big, it's crowded and there's no better bar for blocks in any direction. If you have to go to this area, this is the place you'll want to drink.
-

Still pouring
This unlikely crab shack on the far end of Duane Street draws a lively after work Tribeca crowd.

Still pouring
An anachronism in the newly self-conciously hip LES, Iggy's is a bar where people go to get trashed and have fun.
-
430 Amsterdam Ave. · Upper West Side
Still pouring
Loud and raucous, the student crowd here's the same as the other big frat bars on this block, but at least Jake's has a backroom that's free of TVs, so you can try and score digits without the sickly plasma palor.
-
520 E. 6th St. · East Village
Closed; now Josie's
A low-key dive. Boasts really cheap beer, a great juke country box, and a fiercely competive pool table.
-

Closed; now Carragher's at the Irish American
A bar for stock clerks not stock brokers.
-

-
4168 Broadway · Washington Heights
Closed; now Planet Fitness
An upscale gay bar with a downtown vibe. The two for one happy runs until 10pm every night of the week. The crowd starts off older and whiter and gets hotter, younger and blacker as the night progresses.
-
109 Macdougal St. · Greenwich Village
Still pouring
With cheap beer, wings, sliders, beer pong, and all the big games is it any surprise that Off the Wagon is the frat bar du jour for NYU backwards baseball cap set.
-
2021 7th Ave. · Central Harlem
Closed
This locals dive is one of the oldest bars in Harlem. It's not so much a destination as a place to end up. But it you find yourself here, there's a pool table, a game on the TV, and even a piano against the wall if you've got the chops.
-
110 Chambers St. · TriBeCa
Closed; now Alto
At the last of the Tribeca dive bars a pitcher of PBR can be had for just $6. Which is good because you'll need to pound a half dozen or so to match the general level of sobriety.

Hugely popular latin club where the crowd dresses to impress and comes to dance. Hot is really the only word for it.
-
157 Avenue C · East Village
Still pouring
In the ongoing culture wars of the East Village bar scene, Royale is a huge strike for UESification. Between the plasma TVs, baseball caps, rounds of shots and the girls whose most comfortable mode of communication is via a series of high pitched squeels you can easily forget that not too long ago this used to be one of the best Jazz bars in New York.
-

-

Closed; now Corner Bistro
Four rooms with remarkably different atmospheres combine to form the Sidewalk Café. There's a clean and comfortable cafe, a dive bar, a downstairs pool table area, and a live music room. Two of the four rooms are all ages, so it's not a bad place to take your little brother when he's in town.

4,000 square feet, 30 TVs, a beer pong table and the hottest bartenders in the city. WooHoo! Shots of Jager for my boys and those aging delta deltas over there.
-
134 W. 3rd · Greenwich Village
Closed; now 3 Sheets Saloon
Calling a bar a frat bar implies at least a partial college education. Failing such ready nomenclature this is a Drink too much, puke in the toilet, tip the bathroom attendant the change in your pocket, go back to the bar, sweat profusely, wait forever for a drink, get in a screaming match with your girlfriend and call her a slut, then cry on her shoulder on the cab ride back to Penn Station kind of place. It's also great for parties and fund-raisers.
-
57 Murray St. · TriBeCa
Closed; now Monk McGinn's
The kind of bar that lives or dies on the charisma and/or tits of its bartending staff. And it's very much alive and well.
-
1576 3rd. Ave. · Upper East Side
A different business is licensed at this address: Yumei Sushi
Attempting to be simultaneously a sports bar and lounge space is naturally going to involve some compromises. The TVs and noise level distract from conversation, the 30 bottle wine list and potted plants make for an odd place to catch the game. However, the extremely small segment of the population that loves a good wine with the Laker's game this place is your best bet in New York.
-
110 Rivington St. · Lower East Side
Still pouring
A carefully crafted vibe supported by good music, dim lighting, and unusual French-Vietnamese cocktails elevates Verlaine above its many loungey counterparts in this area.

-
123 Rivington St. · Lower East Side
Still pouring
It's tempting to dismiss this 70's themed bar simply out of hand, but spend an evening there and you'll soon quite suprisingly discover it's warm, comfortable and populated by some of the tastiest hipsters this side of Greenpoint.
-
149 Bleeker St. · Greenwich Village
Still pouring
A dark, crappy, and quickly becoming notorious student bar where the drinks are cheap, the dance floor is over-crowded, everyone's trashed, and the waitresses keep coming around with jello-shots. Naturally this can be a fantastic time if you're of a certain age or frame of mind.

-
Moe'sPick
80 Lafayette Ave · Fort Greene
Closed; now Mo’s Bar & Lounge
At some point in the late 90's when the first millionaires started moving onto Avenue C the spiritual heart of New York City started making its way East from the Village to Brooklyn. Following shortly behind the city's spiritual liver took up residency at Moe's. Rich, vibrant, edgy and diverse, Moe's is never boring and everything a New York City bars should be.
-

1089 Grand St. · Bushwick
Still pouring
A strip club in the twilight zone where Williamsburg meets Bushwick and Metropolitan and Grand collide. There's no cover and a beer can be had for $4 during happy hour (before 3-6pm). The word gritty doesn't quite do it justice.

GueroClosed by 2009
210 Rivington St. · Lower East Side

Far enough East to become a kind of LES time warp. Guero is the type of bar that drew people to the neighborhood before it became a scene. Comfortable, neighborhoody, and cheap as dirt before 10pm thanks to an extended 2-for-1 happy hour.
