Overview

The kind of bar that lives or dies on the charisma and/or tits of its bartending staff. And it's very much alive and well.

History

A hard-hat bar in the heart of Tribeca

Uncle Mike's was a real working-class bar in the heart of Tribeca, with a construction-worker crowd, live music and bartenders in bikinis1, 2.

Undercover underage officers bought alcohol there in September 2010, August 2011 and January 2012, and in March 2012 the city sued to close it as a public nuisance2. It closed for good on June 30, 2012, after failing to renew its liquor license2.

That July a British gastropub, the Cricketer's Arms, was announced for the space, from Brian McLaughlin, who owned three Downtown taverns3. The pub that followed it was to be called Hell Cat Maggie until October 2017, when the name became Monk McGinn's, and Damien O'Brien and Tadhg O'Callaghan opened it in March 20184, 5, 6. It is a two-story craft beer and cocktail bar with a speakeasy upstairs7.
