Horseshoe shaped bar where the beer is cheap and the rock is loud and hard.
-
531 E. 5th St. · East Village

A December 2005 auction of the bar on Ebay may have failed to attract any bids, but we think it's worth every penny of the 650k list price. Pinball anyone?

AmbiancePick
68 2nd Ave. · East Village
Closed; now Luscious Market Deli
Smells of must and vomit, but you'll soon forget to care. Cheap beer, friendly bartenders, and even odds of walking in and getting straight on the pool any night of the week.
-
58 Bleecker St. · NoHo
Moved to 648 Broadway
A male to female ratio few straight bars can rival. This is a bar for men. Men who like pool and darts and TV and top 80's and 90's top 40.
-
14 Ave. A · East Village
Still pouring
This NYC outpost of the Vegas Double Down has a long wooden bar and a pool table in back. The wall is emblazed with a disclaimer: You puke. You clean it. It might seem odd until you realize they serve a Bacon Martini (made with real bacon) and a shot called Ass Juice made from undisclosed ingrediants.
-
430 Amsterdam Ave. · Upper West Side
Still pouring
Loud and raucous, the student crowd here's the same as the other big frat bars on this block, but at least Jake's has a backroom that's free of TVs, so you can try and score digits without the sickly plasma palor.
-
162 Ave. B · East Village
Closed; now Dream Baby
A young and heavy drinking crowd of loyal regulars show up for free nightly live music in one room and a vibrant bar scene in the other. And if the bands in between sets there's always table top Pac Man and a working old style photo booth.
-
135 Ave. A · East Village
Still pouring
Pinball! Pool and not much else, in this comfortable, relaxed extremely low key dive.
-
Manitoba'sPick
99 Ave. B · East Village
Closed; now Thayer
Owned and operated by Dick Manitoba a former front man for The Dictators , Manitoba's, while not exactly a punk bar per se, remains true to the spirit of punk - camaraderie and anit-materialism. The crowd's as friendly as any you'll find, a Rheingold can be had for $3, and no cover live bands play here most nights. With a combo like that it's hard to think of a reason not to go.
-
Mars 2112Pick
1633 Broadway · Midtown West
Closed; now Din Tai Fung
It's a bar and it's a restaurant, and it's on Mars. What more do you need to know? If you haven’t been and think you can manage to eat and drink with your tongue in your cheek then it's time you paid it a visit.
-
178 Ludlow St. · Lower East Side
A different business is licensed at this address: Sweet Chick LES
A pool table, booths and a crowd that likes to drink. This place mantains the vibe of an LES which was swallowed up by skyrocketing rents years ago.
-
127 Ludlow St. · Lower East Side
Closed; now Dulce
A Bar as ode to the automobile. The Detroit natives who own this bar have created a remarkably comfortable bar despite the fact its bedecked in auto paraphernalia.
-
NiagaraPick

Good music, 3 rooms with 3 very different vibes, and a neighorhood crowd looking to get drunk and hook up.

-
538 E. 14th St. · East Village

An unholy marriage of a Hawaiian tiki bar and a metal club. Enjoy a Mai Tai with your Judas Priest or better yet have a Zombie with your White Zombie.
-
447 E. 13th St. · East Village
Still pouring
Just a friendly neighborhood gay bar without pretense or cruise-or-die mentality.
-

A low key locals hang out. Sundays are gay nights, but the crowd is always fairly mixed.
-

Grungy low key atmosphere + second furniture + back garden + pool table + live jazz - hipsters = A solid neighborhood bar.
-
BoatPick
175 Smith St. · Boerum Hill
Still pouring
Comfy couches, a fireplace, attentive service, and an attractive crowd make Boat a top choice on Smith Street.
-
577 5th Ave. · South Slope
Still pouring
This is the Windsor Terrace neighborhood bar and what a bar it is. The space is comfortable. The jukebox is killer. The happy hour is long. And every broke indie kid in the hood comes here to be reminded of how lucky they were to be priced out of North Slope.
-
437 Graham Ave. · Greenpoint
Closed
It can be a tough choice. Should you drop your quarter into the The Lord of the Rings pinball machine or the Elvis one?
-
Enid'sPick
560 Manhattan Ave. · Greenpoint
Closed; now Matches
Big windows, tall ceilings, PacMan, Galaga. What more do you need?
-
593 Lorimer St. · East Williamsburg
Closed; now DeStefano's Steakhouse
The kitchen is inconsistent, the décor is devoid of personality, and the crowd tends toward shout-talking, but on Tuesday nights they give away free beer from 8:30-10pm, sure it's only PBR cans, but it's FREE BEER.
-
212 Berry St. · Williamsburg North Side
Still pouring
A Black Label and a shot of Evan Williams for $4 ensures that the Levee never runs dry. Add a Harley Davidson pinball machine at 3 games for $1 and you've got somebody's idea of heaven.
-
Mug's Ale HousePick

Williamsburg fixture keeps the beer ultra-cheep and its crowd drunk and happy.

Zablozki'sPick

Zablowski’s is the homestead of the older Williamsburg scene, a neighborhood bar in a neighborhood full of bars. Sexy lighting and lots of wood create a warm, welcoming vibe which fills the large space and draws you in. The cheap pints keep you there.
