History
A Laurel and Hardy name, still on Christopher Street
Kettle of Fish opened in the West Village in 1950 as a restaurant and bar, named for a catch phrase popularized by Laurel and Hardy1. In 1987 it moved to the former site of Gerde's Folk City on 3rd Street1.
In 1998, when the owner was retiring, Patrick bought the name and went looking for a new home for it1. One place he looked at was the Lion's Head, at 59 Christopher Street, which had closed two years earlier1. That's where we found Kettle of Fish, and where it still is2.
Like other bars, it was shut down in March 20201. Then, on Sunday, July 3, 2022, with many people out of town, a fire started on the roof of 59 Christopher1. When Village View caught up with Patrick and Adriane, they had spent two months hosting a soft opening while still working on little repair details and getting new air conditioning running1. These days it's open from noon to 4am on weekdays2.
