Overview

Smells of must and vomit, but you'll soon forget to care. Cheap beer, friendly bartenders, and even odds of walking in and getting straight on the pool any night of the week.

2 by 4 is quite plainly a drinker's bar. The beer here's cheap, the happy hour's long, and despite the bar's corner location sunlight is something they've clearly made a point to keep outside and away from bleary eyes.

This is the kind of bar where you can stop in, pull up a chair at the end of the bar, drink half a bottle of scotch, and pass out in a puddle of drool. Not only will no one here give you so much as a sideways glance, in all probability the bartender will kindly lift your head by your hair and wipe up the puddle for you. If you just came home early from work to discover your wife in flagrante delicato with the Fresh Direct delivery guy, this is the bar for you.

Why you should go

  • Cheap beer
  • Long happy hour
  • The pool table has a good light, lots of room, and little to no wait to play.

What you should know

  • The seats at the bar are best left for regulars or those who aspire to be.
  • The bartenders here pull double duty as den mothers
  • In August 2008 following an incident in which a female bartender glassed a patron, Two by Four was rechristened with the best dive bar monkiker in the city -- Ambiance.

History

One horse on the Second Avenue carousel

Ambiance was one of a run of bars at 68 Second Avenue, at Fourth Street, that also included 2x4 and Evolution1. In our day it offered cheap beer, friendly bartenders and even odds of getting straight onto the pool table. The carousel stopped in September 2010, when Queen Vic opened1. By 2022 a for-lease sign hung in the front window1.
