The sign came back; the bar didn't
We once made the case for Enid's as a list: big windows, tall ceilings, Pac-Man, Galaga, and what more did you need? It opened in 1999 and quickly became a popular brunch and drinking spot, with a large L-shaped bar at the far back left, and it was not, one writer recalled, a place to stand idly1, 2. The same writer remembered it as the spot for the almost-30 crowd, across the street from the younger one at the bar Matchless2.
On January 31, 2019, Enid's announced that it would close on March 31, after 20 years in the space1, 3. Greenpointers soon warned readers that they had less than two weeks left to say goodbye in person4.
Bar Bruno, a Mexican bistro, opened in the corner space in 2022; one of its owners, Shannon Kimball, said she had been at Enid's in the beginning and knew she had big shoes to fill5. By January 2026 it appeared to have quietly closed6. That June, construction uncovered the original Enid's sign, and the old Enid's team confirmed to Greenpointers that the bar is not returning7.
What's there now is Matches, from the Greenpoint Fish & Lobster team, with a name that pays tribute to a neighboring bar of yore8. The Infatuation calls it a casual, reasonably priced, American-ish restaurant that turns into a dance floor at night: pretty much Enid's, with slightly more ambitious food9.
