History

The long way around the corner

Bleecker Street Bar opened in 1980 and quickly became a local favorite for sports, pool, darts and good drinks1. Back then we summed it up as pool and darts and TV, which is to say it knew exactly what it was.

It closed its doors on Sunday, August 30, 20201. In March 2021 the owners asked to move the license around the corner, from 56-58 Bleecker Street to 648 Broadway, 285 feet away2. It reopened there in May 2023, two and a half years after it closed, a closing 6sqft put down to the pandemic1. That's 285 feet in two and a half years, but it made it1, 2.

When Forgotten New York passed in September 2026, the ground floor at the old address was Sabah, a shop selling handmade Turkish footwear where you can apparently also hear live sitar music3.
