Overview

Just a friendly neighborhood gay bar without pretense or cruise-or-die mentality.

History

Still without pretense, in fewer words

When we listed it, we called the Phoenix just a friendly neighborhood gay bar without pretense or cruise-or-die mentality. Its own site now puts it in fewer words: queer neighborhood bar in the East Village1.

It has been a favorite on the queer East Village circuit since it burst onto the scene in the '90s2, and at 447 East 13th Street since 19991, 3. The bar's site says it changed hands in 20241. The community board's minutes describe someone who had worked there since 2013, first as a bartender and then as manager3.

It's open every day from 3 in the afternoon until 4 in the morning1, with happy hour from 3 to 71.
