Overview

Comfy couches, a fireplace, attentive service, and an attractive crowd make Boat a top choice on Smith Street.
Boat is that rare bar that manages to be many things to many people. On any given afternoon the bar is populated with a handful of neighborhood locals, chatting idly with the bartender, playing board games, reading a book. On weekends the front room is slammed. There's unavoidable contact. Strangers talk. Digits are exchanged. But in the back half of the room groups of friends congregate around the fireplace and have easy conversation from comfortable loosely grouped seating.

Why you should go

  • On a cold winter night a spot by the fireplace is a rare treasure.
  • Even on slow nights Boat is rarely empty.

What you should know

  • There's board games available for passing the time when the bars less crowded.
  • The juke box is packed with house made mixes. Copywrites be damned.

History

Still a Smith Street staple

We called Boat a Smith Street staple, on the strength of its comfy couches and its fireplace. The label held: Apple Maps still lists it at 175 Smith Street, opening at 5pm1.
