Finally Williamsburg has something it desperately needed: good dancing. Hugs feels like a European underground club, sans the awkwardness of being nineteen and speaking no Slovak. With great seating, great lighting, and ski-ball, Hugs offers nothing more than a good time. The music can be hit or miss, but all else is delivered effortlessly.

In a neighborhood where vintage clothing commands prices higher than new Rosemary's will always have a die hard following among the subculture of hipsterism that likes their 32oz styrofoam cups sans irony.
-
594 Union Ave.
Closed; now Casa Publica
A cozy hipster hideaway on the corner of McCarren Park, Royal Oak convincingly integrates a dive bar and underground dance club. Large leather booths and free foosball quell the nausea of the scene; that is, twenty-something white people dressed in forty-something clothing dancing to pop music of thirty-somethings.
-

The word Sound was added to the name of this coffee shop by day and lounge by night, and the chill atmosphere has been given a jolt courtesy of nightly live music acts.

-
213 N. 8th St.
No license found in 2026
Mix 1 part art gallery, 1 part bar, 1 part dance club, and 2 parts unpredictability and you get this bar struggling to be all parts at once. It is definitely a hit or miss, sometime full of kahki-wearing golfers who’ve heard it’s cool, sometimes full of plaid wearing hipsters who think it’s cool.
-
105 N. 6th St.
Still pouring
Once the last hold out of old prehipster Williamsburg, now a crappy restaurant.
-
96 Berry St.
Still pouring
Tin ceilings, stained glass, and 30 odd years of grit worked into the bar make for a more authentic offering then is to be had from most of Teddy's neighbors. The sun filled front room is the place to be for brunch, and the long bar fills with baby boomers and their babies every night of the week.
-
256 Grand St.
Closed; now Southside Boxing
The working class roots that the area's many art school dropouts are at such pains to emulate are evident in spades at this Williamsburg dive, but there's no need to worry that the hipsters will take over. This bar has top notch hipster repellent - heavy metal. This leaves the associated regulars to profess their love for the free tater tots without worrying about the quality of their ironic lilt.
-
484 Union Ave.
Still pouring
Although anyone who's lived in Williamsburg more than a year will claim the scene is far past its sell by date, Union Pool remains an attractive and popular space. On a weeknight in the fall a spot by the firepit in the back garden is nothing short of a treasure.
-
Zablozki'sPick
107 N. 6th St.
Closed; now Mejuri
Zablowski’s is the homestead of the older Williamsburg scene, a neighborhood bar in a neighborhood full of bars. Sexy lighting and lots of wood create a warm, welcoming vibe which fills the large space and draws you in. The cheap pints keep you there.
-
ZebulonPick
258 Wythe Ave.
Moved to Frogtown, Los Angeles
In Williamsburg where what passes for Bohemia tends to be deintellectualized, unsubstantive and culturally barren, a night spent in Zebulon can be almost disorienting. Patrons emerge at the end of the night as if from a darkened theatre where they've been transported by some strange fiction to a world bereft of pop culture references or tedious irony.

Purple hues, sunken sofas, dim lighting, portraits of lover's in flagrante delicto, and a mix of funk, R&B and soul all conspire to create a vibe which attracts a clientele as diverse as the borough itself while scaring away hipsters who take their schmaltz too seriously to enjoy it served anyway other than ironically.
