History

From gastropub to TurboTax

When Earwax owner Tom Schmitz opened Spike Hill in 2005, it was billed as a gastropub1. News broke of the sale of 186 Bedford Avenue and the bar's imminent closure, and by December 17, 2014, Spike Hill had closed1. Vacant buildings came down in 2022, and a Bedford Avenue development now has Intuit TurboTax as a tenant, with Zara set to join it2. The bar's own website puts it simply: "Sad but true Spike Hill is closed"3.
