When Brooklyn Brewery delivered its first case of Brooklyn Lager in 1988, it went to Teddy's front door1. By then there had been a bar in the space for a century1.
It opened in 1887 as a family-owned Irish tavern and in the early 1910s became a tasting room for the Peter Doelger Brewery1. In the 1950s Teddy and his wife Mary Prusik bought it and renamed it Teddy's Bar1. They ran it until 1987, when new owners took over and added a kitchen and a dining room in the old carriage house1.
We knew it for its tin ceilings, stained glass and decades of grit worked into the bar, with a sunny front room for brunch and a long bar that filled every night with baby boomers and their babies.
In 2015 the owners sold the business but kept the space and their home upstairs2. The new owners have been restoring and redecorating, careful to honor its heritage, and it's still at 96 Berry Street1, 3.
Researched October 2026.
