Overview

Spot the blue owl and head downstairs to this warmly lit semi-secret basement/cavern. You'll find expensive, but expertly crafted cocktails, and a crowd more uptown than East Village.

The cocktails are competantly prepared, the atmosphere is reasonably sexy, but it's the extremely discreet, if not exactly secret location is the primary draw to this sexy East Village lounge.

Why you should go

  • They serve cheese with your drinks. Good cheese.
  • Stone walls, candles, and ottomans conspire to create a relaxed, loungey vibe.

What you should know

  • The entrance is down stairs marked only by a hanging blue owl.
  • If you like secrets check out: La Esquina, Void, NuBlu, Chumleys, Milk and Honey, The Back Room, Decibel, Angel's Share.
  • Be careful not to pick your nose in front of the mirror in the back, it's two ways and secludes a rather awkwardly shaped private room.
  • If your thinking about booking a party for the back room, have a good look first so you know what your getting into.

History

The lounge behind the lounge

Blue Owl was a basement bar marked by an unobtrusive image of a blue owl over the stairs, and it hid a tiny cocktail lounge behind a two-way mirrored door1, 2. The house cocktail was gin, maraschino liqueur and fresh lemon juice2. The space went on the market in the fall of 2012, and the seven-year-old bar closed in June 2013, so quietly that EV Grieve wasn't sure of the exact date3. Fitting, for a place you had to know to find.
