Your father's bar, while he's away
Co-owner Robert Morgan said Shoolbred's was designed as "Your Father's Bar, while your father is away on business"1. It was a Scottish-style pub, spelled Schoolbred's in our listing, with wood-paneled walls, stained-glass windows and a fireplace1, at an address that had been Jade Mountain, home of a great Chow Mein sign, until 20071. The look came from another co-owner, the Tony-winning set designer William Ivey Long, who filled the room with orchids, cherrywood paneling and Louise Bourgeois lithographs2.
It closed, fittingly, after service on Father's Day in June 2017, nearly ten years in1. Morgan said they were handing the space back to a landlord asking "egregious rents"1, and by that August the storefront was on the market at $18,500 a month3.
Black Emperor applied to open in the space in October 20183 and shut down in August 20204. A "neighborhood-ish bar concept" opened there in the fall of 20224, and in 2024 a city marshal's notice on the storefront put the landlord back in legal possession of the space4.
