One of the best alt-rock venues anywhere in the city is located in Greenpoint of all places.

History

Pierogies, kielbasa and Public Enemy

"Where Pierogis Meet Punk" is the tagline, and it's about as accurate as taglines get1, 2. The building started out as the Polish National Home, where the city's Poles gathered throughout the 20th century; Ticketmaster dates it to 1904, the venue itself to 19141, 2. In 2001 the space took the name Warsaw and began hosting punk and indie rock shows to raise money for community events1.

The decor stayed homespun, with relics of the community center's past, and the pierogies and kielbasa stayed on the menu2. The stage drew an eclectic roster of largely independent alternative rock, punk and hip-hop acts, among them Jack White, Joan Jett, Patti Smith, Public Enemy, Weezer, Lorde and the Black Keys2. When we listed it, we called it one of the best alt-rock venues anywhere in the city, located in Greenpoint of all places.

In 2016 Live Nation took over the booking3. Its largest renovation in years began in 2022 and closed the room for accessibility, bathroom and balcony work2, 4. When it was finished in September 2023, the balcony was bigger, there was an added bar and lounge, and the bars took cashless payments2.

In August 2026 Olivia Rodrigo dropped a surprise one-night-only show there, and the 1,000-capacity room sold out within two hours5. It's still at 261 Driggs Avenue, selling tickets into late 20266.
