Overview

Considering Williamsburg’s place atop the trendy hood hierarchy, the faux-speakeasy trend arrived surprisingly late in L train land. Nevertheless, it has at last, and East Williamsburg’s The Richardson is an impressive interpretation.
Considering Williamsburg’s place atop the trendy ‘hood hierarchy, the faux-speakeasy trend arrived surprisingly late in L train land. Nevertheless, it has at last, and East Williamsburg’s The Richardson is an impressive interpretation. Classic and contemporary tipples populate the meticulous cocktail menu, and light bites are available to help lightweights soak up the spirits. With its virtuoso bartenders, no-gimmick vibe, and (weather permitting) outdoor seating, The Richardson is pretty much The Bomb.

History

Faux speakeasy, real staying power

We once filed The Richardson under the faux-speakeasy trend and called it an impressive interpretation; the bar itself, established in 2008, prefers "a proper American bar"1. Owner and manager Joel Lee Kulp had a vision of the kind of bar he wanted in the area2, and it has become a Greenpoint byword for date nights, weekends with friends and nightcaps2. In 2013 the same owners opened another place, Grand Ferry, in Williamsburg3. The Richardson still pours cocktails and whiskey at 451 Graham Avenue1, 4.
