Overview

This old school/old men's cigar bar has all the elements of a classic mens club: a strict jacket policy, a 25 and over door policy, waitresses in cocktail dresses, and a glowing fireplace.
Those of a certain age and socioeconomic class will be greeted respectfully at the door where their topcoat will be taken, and cigars, wine, fine brandy and whiskey will be proferred. However this respectful butler will quickly turn bouncer for those less well healed or too young. A jacket, sharp shoes, and an ID with a birth date prior to the Reagan administration are strict requirements for entry to these austere environs.

Once inside you'll find a dimly lit mahohany trimmed cigar bar walled in with bookshelfs. Impressive cigar, whiskey and brandy lists are worth exploring, and caviar and cheese plates provide complete the experiense.

Why you should go

  • Lexington Bar and Books in one of only a handful of bars left in the city where you can still smoke
  • It's a successful rendition of the club cigar lounge. Caviar, brandy, and attractive waitresses in tight cocktail dresses complete the picture.

What you should know

  • Monday nights ladies get a free cigar
  • You must be twenty-five or over to enter
  • Jackets are required in full and winter. Smart shoes and a tucked in collared shirt are required year around
  • There are also locations downtown (Hudson Bar and Books) and in Prague (Tynska Bar and Books)

History

The tile floor outlived the jacket policy

Lexington Bar and Books was a longtime cigar bar, which we remembered for its strict jacket policy and glowing fireplace1. By May 2021 it had closed, and a cocktail bar called Herm was announced for its former home1. In April 2022 Melody's Piano Bar opened at 1020 Lexington Avenue, keeping the Art Deco tile floor from its legendary predecessor2. It stays open until four in the morning six nights a week3.
