Overview

A true New York classic. A martini here is second to none. The mural outside is a commission of Ludwig Bemelman, the author of the children's book series Madeline.

History

Still the piano, still the murals

The Carlyle still runs Bemelmans Bar at 35 East 76th Street, with nightly piano, late-night jazz and murals by Ludwig Bemelmans¹. In 2009 we credited the mural to one Ludwig Bemelman; the hotel spells him with an s, and it should know¹. The music carries a cover charge, starting with the pianist's opening set at 5:30 pm and running into the jazz trio from 9 pm onward¹.
