History
Where the subway blasts shook the tables
Digging the Second Avenue subway took explosions, and the explosions set the tables shaking at Beach Cafe1. That's one item on a list of things the place has come through, along with the Great Recession and rising Manhattan rent1.
It has been open on the Upper East Side since 19682. Dave Goodside started at Beach as the host; by 2022 he'd been there 36 years and owned it for 161, 2.
In 2020 and 2021 it served drinks and to-go items through a window, then built an elaborate deck1.
It's at 1326 Second Avenue, open from 10:30 in the morning to midnight seven days a week2, and still close to its roots: classic American food, and a room where New Yorkers meet2.
