History
Cigars, single malts and monkey sconces
It opened on Hudson Street when the idea of a luxury cigar bar was all but nonexistent in New York, and by 2014 it was the original of a chain of five1. Besides the traditional leather banquettes, wood paneling and bookshelves, it ran to English monkey sconces, leopard pillows and a copper bar1. Time Out rated its single-malt Scotches and cognacs topflight, and in 2003 Cigar Aficionado named it one of two Bar & Books where smoking continued2, 3. A 2026 guide, allowing that New York has several Bar and Books, called the one near the Hudson "the best whiskey bar of all"4.
