Tribe

East Village, Manhattan

Closed; now The Lions Bar & Grill

Later here: Vbar St Marks (licensed 2017–19).

Overview

A shiny, polished, glowy Meatpacking lounge that somehow ended up here in the East Village. On weekends Tribe packs with enough urban professionals to obliterate any chance of actually lounging, but no ones here for that anyway. This is a place to look good and score digits.

History

Meatpacking gloss, meet the East Village rent

Our old listing called Tribe a shiny, polished, glowy Meatpacking lounge that somehow ended up in the East Village. It wasn't the first bar at the address: the St. Marks Bar & Grill was there in 19811.

Tribe's final day was Thursday, January 29, 20092. It closed after negotiations with the landlord failed; the landlord had asked for a "100 percent increase" in rent2.

In February 2024 Eater reported that the space's new tenant would be the Lions, an American bar and grill with martinis, burgers and fries3. The Lions Bar & Grill is there now, at 132 1st Avenue1, 4.
