Overview
The nearest thing to a genuine Parisian café that the East Village has to offer.
History
Paris left; Sonny moved in
We called Simone the nearest thing to a genuine Parisian café the East Village had to offer. After 15 years it closed for good following service on a Saturday night at the end of 2014, and its sister restaurant nearby had closed earlier that fall1. Jason Mendenhall and Robert Ceraso of the Wayland applied for the space, and the Wayland's group opened Good Night Sonny there, a bar-restaurant that does oysters, sandwiches and small plates like steak tartare2, 3, 4, 5, 6. It's named for an owner's maternal grandfather, from a family that owned a bar on the corner of Mulberry and Hester for 40 years or so, and it's still open3, 7.
