Bar Tabac's own history begins with Georges, who arrived in New York in 1979 with $500 and a backpack1. For almost 20 years it hosted what it calls one of the most beloved Bastille Day celebrations in the country, with a pétanque tournament, live music and French food and drink1. When we listed it, we sent readers here for brunch and for French bistro fare until three in the morning, one of the best late-night options on Smith Street. These days it keeps gentler hours, 11am to 11pm every day, still on the corner of Smith and Dean2.
