Overview

An enormously popular E. Village ramen bar with steamed buns to die for.

Situated near the corner of 10th St and 1st Ave. Momofuku Noodle Bar has quickly become an E. Village favorite with its pork lover's update to traditional Ramen. The restaurant is small and sparse, the seating is arm to arm with your neighbor, but the food not the setting is the draw here. The menu is short, simple and well executed, consisting primarily of large bowls of ramen, fresh green market vegetables, and the legendary Momofuku steamed buns.

Why you should go

  • The steamed pork buns, aren't just good, they're otherworldy.
  • Communal seating and young attractive neighborhood crowd make for an unlikely pick up spot.
  • Mmmm....bacon and lots of it.

What you should know

  • Afficianados will note that the the ramen here, while perhaps more suitable to the American pallete, lacks Koshi (chewy flavor).
  • The Nigori sake for $5 is a cloudy slightly sweet and an utterly delicious bargain.

History

Ramen plus bacon, a few doors over

David Chang opened his first restaurant, Momofuku Noodle Bar, in the East Village in 2004, and its first home was 163 First Avenue1, 2. We asked whether ramen plus bacon equaled heaven, and said the steamed buns were to die for.

Noodle Bar moved a few storefronts away, to 171 First Avenue between 10th and 11th Streets, where it's still open1, 2.

The old room didn't stay quiet. It was Momofuku Ko for six years, from 2008 to 2014, and then Fuku2. After Fuku closed in the spring of 2018 the storefront sat empty, and on July 20, 2022, HAGS opened there2.
