History
Three streets, one corner, thirty years
Tavern on Jane went into a defunct seafood eatery at Jane Street and Eighth Avenue1. Michael Stewart and his partner, Horton Foote Jr., had set out in October 1995 to open a neighborhood restaurant and bar somewhere in Manhattan, and this one worked for them1. Foote put in $85,000 and Stewart $65,000, and they didn't need any other investors1.
Foote moved on to other ventures in 2014, when Stewart bought his share and became sole owner1. In 2025 the tavern celebrated its 30th anniversary, a fixture in the neighborhood1, and in 2026 Village Preservation made it one of that year's Village Award winners2.
It's still at 31 Eighth Avenue, on the corner where Eighth Avenue, West 4th Street and Jane Street meet2, 3. Thirty years on, nobody asks about the seafood.
