Bordello red, then film noir
Time Out found "low red lights, a bordellolike atmosphere and, yeah, a V-shaped bar"1. When we listed it, we called it a sexy lounge that drew New Yorkers and expats with world beats, live music and friendly service.
By May 2010 Time Out had marked it closed, and EV Grieve reported that Lava Gina, on Avenue C between Seventh and Eighth Streets, had become Vibrations Lounge1, 2.
In March 2012 Edi & the Wolf partners Eduard Frauneder and Wolfgang Ban were aiming to take over the space3. The plywood came down that November4, and their lounge, The Third Man, opened in December 20125. It was named after the 1949 film-noir classic starring Orson Welles4. Several Instagram users put its last day at February 1, 20205.
In 2020 Ding-A-Ling Cocktail Lounge was announced as a casual, music-driven neighborhood bar serving simple cocktails and vegan junk food6. Ding-a-Ling still lists 116 Avenue C and promises it is always serving food7. In September 2026 another bar, Rad's, from the team behind Sweetie and Jewel Box, was announced for the same address8.
