Overview

Cheap beers, dim lights, beat up sofas, wood paneling, and a pool table - this could almost be a frat basement, except it's the kind of bar where frat boys get kidney punched.

The 119 bar beckons patrons with its red lights, red pool table, and chilled crowd outside smoking. As dive's go the 119 bar is about as dingey as they come. More rec room than bar, it's not hard to imagine forgeting where you were for a second and thinking you were in a college friend's basement.

Why you should go

  • You never have to wait long to get a game of pool, but to stay on the table your game has to be pretty tight.
  • A $4 pint of Yuengling near Union Square is almost a trophy.
  • Situated just around the corner from Irving Plaza it makes for a convenient for concert pint.

What you should know

  • The popularity of this bar is hugely seasonal. In the summer whilst NYU is out of session there's rarely any trouble getting a table.

History

Not quite the last dive bar in NYC

119 Bar proclaimed itself "the last dive bar in NYC," and backed it up with dumpy couches and local college kids downing cheap beer1. It closed in February 2011, and its space went into a new restaurant2. Today the address is a bar called The High Note, which opens at five every evening3.
