Still pouring

Overview

When NYU's out of session Shades thins out a bit leaving a solid core of regulars with appreciation for solid service and a perfect pint of Guinness.

History

From the blues to the green

In 1989 Pat Cormican, a Galway native, turned what had been a blues club into Shades of Green, a proper green pub pouring Guinness behind a scuffed wooden bar1. Our old listing noted that when NYU was out of session, Shades thinned out to a solid core of regulars and a perfect pint of Guinness. A guide to the pub has Cormican sharing it with his son, John Patrick1. It still pours at 125 East 15th Street until 4 in the morning on Fridays and Saturdays, and on St. Patrick's Day 2026 it opened at noon2, 3.
