Overview
A second floor bar, just far enough out of the way to be interesting. Attracts a crowd of regulars of all ages.
History
One flight up, and off the Russian vodka
By its own account, the one-room bar one flight above the Kraine Gallery was first opened in 1920, by Lucky Luciano, as a speakeasy1. A drier source, from 2011, has the second floor in use as a tavern since 19482.
The Kraine Gallery opened on the main floor in 19821. KGB Bar opened above it in March 1993, in the former headquarters of the Ukrainian Labor Home1. We called it just far enough out of the way to be interesting, with regulars of all ages.
In 2022 owner Denis Woychuk stopped selling Baltika beer and swapped nearly three dozen cases of Russian vodka for Ukrainian brands3. The bar is still up its flight of stairs at 85 East 4th Street1.
