History
An antique shop that pours by the glass
When it opened, the Village Voice found the frog sitting in the window, the Turks hanging out behind the bar and the Manhattanites sitting all around1. It was an antique shop and a wine bar at once, a cozy den decorated with the shop's own stock: glowing lanterns, hand-painted ceramics, 19th-century urns1.
Brothers Osman and Orhan Cakir opened it in 20041. The list ran to more than 60 wines from around the world, many of them by the glass for $6 to $121.
It's still at 323 West 11th Street, open from five until midnight Monday through Thursday2. Its website says it looks forward to "uncorking history captured in a bottle," which for a wine bar that opened inside an antique shop is close to a job description2.
