Seven taps, all of them Guinness
"The World's First and the Only All Draft Guinness Bar" is how Paddy Reilly's billed itself in 2009, with what NBC New York called tortured syntax, and all seven of its taps poured the inky brew1. Steve Duggan, a Cavan native, opened it in 1986 with Paddy Reilly of the Irish folk group The Dubliners2.
Black 47 played there on September 18, 1990, and in the early days crowds lined up out the door whenever the band had a Saturday night3. The pub was a launching pad for Irish bands, and The Prodigals were its band for 27 years2, 3. Christy Turlington and Brad Pitt have walked through its doors2.
It almost shut for good after the Covid pandemic3. In 2023 its previous manager, Desi Murray, took over with Joshua Irwin and Aria Bai3. That year Jimmy Fallon stopped in to sing a couple of songs in February, and a month later Hozier celebrated his 33rd birthday there, which happens to be Saint Patrick's Day3. In April the bar closed for two months of renovations3.
It's still pulling pints at 519 Second Avenue, as it has since 1986, and police and fire department patches decorate the back wall2, 4, 5.
