History
The fish swam west to Sixth Avenue
Oceana didn't so much close as change addresses. After 17 years on East 54th Street, the three-star seafood restaurant left for Rockefeller Center in the summer of 20091, 2.
The move came out of a lease dispute, and owner Nick Livanos had been complaining that the crowds were dwindling2, 3. The last night on 54th Street was Saturday, July 25, and the new Oceana, at 1221 Avenue of the Americas and 49th Street, was due to open in early September1, 2.
It's still on 49th Street, the flagship of the Livanos Group, and it calls itself a beloved New York dining destination for over 30 years, a count that includes its years on 54th Street1, 4.
The old space at 55 East 54th Street became Nerai, opened in 2013 by childhood friends Spiro Menegatos and Costa Youssis, and it was still serving in 20265, 6.
