History
Eighty-eight years of piano, then the lease
Bill's Gay Nineties Restaurant and Piano Bar first opened during Prohibition and lasted 88 years1. It filled three floors of a townhouse dating to the 1850s1. A bar named for the Gay Nineties stayed open long enough to become an antique itself.
The end came over the lease, which the owners couldn't renegotiate, and they filed for bankruptcy1, 2. Bill's shut down for good at three in the morning on a Sunday in March 20121.
The name outlived the bar. The address now belongs to the renamed Bill's Supper Club, and its own site announces that it has re-opened3.
