History
A three-year rewrite on East 3rd Street
The Nuyorican Poets Cafe was founded in the 1970s by a pioneering group of Puerto Rican writers1. When we listed it, it was at 236 East 3rd Street, and that's still the address on its contact page2.
On November 1, 2023, the cafe closed its doors to fully renovate1. The building is closed through 2026 for a three-year reconstruction, and in the meantime the cafe works off-site2. Any poet will tell you a good rewrite takes time.
