History
A bayou on East 23rd Street
Live Bait called itself a lively bait shack of a restaurant and bar in the backwoods of the Flat Iron District1. The decor ran to hand-painted signs, a mounted swordfish and a wooden kiosk that housed the raw bar, and the menu took a broad view of the South: Carolina barbecue, catfish, collard greens and biscuits with gravy, alongside riffs on New Orleans favorites such as crab cakes and jerk-chicken heros2, 3. As late as September 2018 its website still promised one of the best happy hours and longest bars in the area; Time Out now marks it closed2, 3. When it went, and what took its place, we couldn't find out.
