Overview

A near perfect recreation of a Parisian brasserie replete with an aged and distressed patina created by importing weathered and worn design details from the Old Country. If only a sophisticated and world wise crowd could be so easily imported as well.

History

Priced out, then brought back

When we listed Pastis, we called it a near-perfect recreation of a Parisian brasserie, its aged and distressed patina built from weathered details imported from the Old Country. It opened in 1999 and stood on the corner of Ninth Avenue for fifteen years1, 2.

Rising rents forced it to close in February 20141, 2. The weathered details came from the Old Country; the rent was strictly local. The old Pastis building is now Restoration Hardware's 90,000-square-foot Manhattan flagship2, 3.

It took Stephen Starr and Keith McNally five years to bring Pastis back, at its new home at 52 Gansevoort Street1. It's there now, open for indoor and outdoor dining4.
