History
Soho House, by way of the Meatpacking District
The plan was Soho1. The founders started out looking for a site there, but nothing felt quite right, and then they found a warehouse in the Meatpacking District1. Soho House New York opened in 2003, the company's first house outside the UK, and it says its members guided it to the city1. Early on, as the company tells it, the likes of David Bowie would join them, and the atmosphere was always really buzzy1.
It's still at 29-35 Ninth Avenue2, set across six floors, with a rooftop pool looking out over the city and a 44-seat screening room2. There's a hotel inside too2. In 2025 the house got updated interiors, refreshed menus and a whole new programme of events3. It opens at seven every morning and stays open till two on Friday and Saturday nights2.
Twenty-odd years on, the name is still the closest it got to Soho.
