Overview

Avoid the crowded table and the minimum drinks, but stop in to hear the music. There's no cover.

History

Live music, in capital letters

From 1901 to 1906, 125 MacDougal was the original Knickerbocker Hotel, a name now found in Times Square1. It had started in 1829 as a two-and-a-half-story Federal-style house built for Alonzo A. Alvord1.

Groove has had the ground floor since 1998, with a mission to uplift local musicians and fans and to preserve the soul of American music1, 2. Our old listing advised skipping the crowded tables and the drink minimum but stopping in for the music, since there was no cover.

Local and traveling artists still play there in a wide array of styles2. It's open Tuesday through Sunday, from four in the afternoon until two in the morning2. The unifying principle, in the club's own capitals, is keeping live music LIVE2.
