Wine and jazz in a townhouse from about 1828
La Lanterna's building at 129 MacDougal Street has had quite a guest list: its notable tenants include the portrait photographer Nickolas Murray, the folk musician and activists Pete and Toshi Seeger, and Eva Kotchever's lesbian speakeasy, Eve's Hangout1, 2. The landmark townhouse went up around 1828, with an identical brother and sister at 131 and 1271.
Carlo Vittorio Antonini, an avid sailor who had come from Liguria a decade earlier with his wife, Marisa, opened La Lanterna in 19771. After his death in 2009, Marisa, Vittorio the son and Vittorio the grandson carried it on1.
Our old listing sent readers to the back and down the stairs, to a wine and jazz bar about as warm and romantic as you could imagine. La Lanterna's own history calls it "the pre-Covid jazz haunt of 19 years"1. Today La Lanterna's website lists Bar Next Door and promises "Live Jazz, Cozy Nights"2.
